How to install a new ROM on your Android smartphone

You might have read or heard people talking about custom ROMs they have installed on their Android devices. Here’s how to do it quickly and safely…

This article is dedicated to the launch of Android Magazine, the world’s first monthly mag 100% dedicated to the little green robot. One of the main reasons people like to root their devices is to install a new or different version of the operating system. The open source nature of the OS means that it’s possible for anyone to view the code that makes up Android and then modify it as they see fit, in a similar way to which the Linux-based desktop operating systems work.

Custom ROMs can offer new features over the standard ones, allowing you to tailor your device to your needs. They also allow developers to port other manufacturers’ interfaces to other device makes – for instance, HTC’s Sense UI onto Samsung phones – or to remove a heavily customised ROM altogether. Another reason is to hurry along the update process: you are no longer tied to waiting on the phone manufacturers and the mobile operators to push out the latest version of Android. Installing a new ROM is a relatively simple and quick process thanks to the ROM Manager app which can be downloaded for free from the Android Market.
First of all you need to root your phone and there are a few methods for doing so. Some of the most popular are: SuperOneClick, Universal Androot and Z4Root. Check the compatibility with your particular device before attempting to gain root access. Here’s how we’ll do it:

1) For this example we’ll use Z4 Root. Download it from here , as it isn’t available on the Market. You will need to register first. Now, copy the .apk file you’ve downloaded to your SD card and then install using an app such as ‘Easy Installer’ or by clicking on the apk in your favourite file manager.

2) Open Z4Root and in the centre you will see a button saying ‘Root’. Click on the button and wait for a short while, for the process to complete; the progress is shown in the bottom bar. After it has finished, the phone will reboot. You now have root access!
Once you’ve rooted your phone, ROM Manager makes backing up, installing a custom recovery and downloading the new one a breeze – and will even enable you to restore your original ROM if you prefer! This tutorial will take you through the process step by step and help you on the way to a fresh new experience with your phone…

Installing ROM Manager
First off, you will need to install the ROM Manager app. The good news its that it’s a free one (although there is a premium version that offers more features). Open up the Android Market from your apps list and search for ‘ROM Manager’, then click the icon and install.

Install Clockwork Recovery
When you rooted your Android device, it’s quite likely that at the same time you installed a piece of ‘custom recovery’ software. ROM Manager will check that you have this installed and that you have the latest version that’s available.

Backup your ROM
Open up ROM Manager, click on the Backup Current ROM button, give the backup a name (perhaps something like ‘Standard ROM Backup’) and then click OK. You might be asked to allow ROM Manager superuser access and you’ll need to grant this.  The phone will now automatically reboot into recovery mode. The backup process can take a little while, so make sure you aren’t expecting any important calls! The recovery backs up your current ROM to the microSD card, so it’s important not to format this.

Choose your ROM
Back in ROM Manager, click ‘Download ROM’. This will bring up a list of available ROMs for your device. In this example we will install CyanogenMod 7, one of the most popular custom versions of
Android due to its stability and wide device support.

Download the ROM
Choose the CyanogenMod version you wish to download – the latest version at time of writing is 7.1.0-RC. It’s strongly advisable to stay away from the ‘Nightly’ builds, as these are largely experimental. Google apps don’t come as standard, so click to download them.

Installing the ROM
Once the ROM and Google Apps have finished downloading, reopen ROM Manager and you will see
the ROM pre-installation screen. Tick the ‘Wipe Dalvik’ and ‘Wipe Data and Cache’ boxes. Click OK and
the phone will now reboot into recovery again. The new ROM will now install. This might take a little while. Once complete, the phone will reboot again. The first boot of any new ROM can take a while, sometimes up to 15 minutes, so be patient and don’t panic if the device appears to have frozen.

Setup your Google Account
Once the phone has booted up, you will then be prompted to enter your Google account details. Doing this will automatically download and set up all your contacts, settings and apps back onto the phone. You now have a brand new ROM to explore!

(Optional) Battery Calibration
Plug in your Android device while it’s on and let it charge fully. Disconnect and turn off, then reconnect the power cable and wait until the LED goes green. Disconnect and turn back on, turn off again and reconnect the charger until the LED goes green again.

Rooting your phone and installing ROMs on your device may void your manufacturer warranty. You undertake the procedure outlined in this tutorial at your own risk. 8 Important But Commonly Ignored Phone Features (Must Read)

1296x863xgirl-on-phone1.jpg.pagespeed.ic.wbqbb-fLH7

Now, you might be exited when you here a phone specifications to be, 3500mAh battery, 5″ inch screen, 16mp camera and so on, but you end up buying the phone and disliking it. Why? Because there are some little thing you ignore in a phone. And most of these things, cheap, starter manufacturers ignore them too when building their phones.
1. Screen Resolution
Sure, most times you don’t ignore screen size but you ignore its resolution, some phones with loud specifications, could actually come with a very poor resolution, so poor you would hate looking at the screen, watching movies or just viewing pictures as they would produce very little detail and poor colours with a lot of noise. For example HD 1080p is alright for a 5″ screen, anything lower than that might not make good impressions to your eyes.
2. Battery Life
Yes Battey Life not Battery Size, these are two different things, look at it this way, a plate of rice for breakfast could last some people till evening, while others, by 12 noon, they are hungry again, the plate of rice here, is the battery size! And depending on the person which is the Phone, it could take them for either half a day or a full day, which is the battery life! So next time you want to buy a phone, don’t just be carried away by 3500mAh, there are phones with just 2000mAh that would last twice longer.
Someone asked me to expanciate this point.
There are some companies that focus on optimising the phone to use less battery power, one company that has been the best at doing this is Sony, they put time in working out how an amount of power should keep the phone up, and cutting down every other place power leaks or is over used. Some other companies don’t care, they believe the bigger the battery the longer the life. Again, Samsung galaxy note 4 has a battery size of 3220mAh and battery life of 8 hours 43 minutes but Samsung Galaxy Note 5(the newer version) has a battery size of 3000mAh(220mAh less) and a battrey life of 9 hours 11 minutes (28 minutes more) so think again.
3. Charge Time
Back to the plate of rice, some people (like my younger brother) can take hours just to eat a plate of rice, but others (like me), mehn no time, na sharp sharp tinz, it should take around 5-10 mins. Back to phones. Just because our phones has the same battery size does not mean they would use the same charging times, a phone might have just 1500mAh battery but would spend minutes longer than a phone with 3500mAh to charge. You know its very annoying to charge your phone for almost an hour, and its just in 60%. So next time you want to buy a phone, try to find out how long it takes to charge full.
4. Camera quality
Again, another thing we skip is the quality of pictures taken by the phone’s camera, mega-pixel does not determine quality, no! Quality of a phone camera varies with devices even when they have the same mega-pixel, an example is the iPhone. Apart from recently announced iPhone 6s, previous versions had 8 mega-pixel cameras up to iPhone 4, but each had progressing camera quality, as iPhone 8-mega-pixel are compared to other phones 13/16/20 mp cameras. Likewise there is no 8 mega-pixel camera (aside from top brands) that can be compared to iPhone’s own, and iPhone 8 mega-pixel even produce better pictures than some phone 16 mega-pixels camera. So you might want to check this out before buying your next phone and not just rely on the mega-pixels.
5. Camera Flash Brightness
All Flashlight aint the same!! Just like every touch light does not have the same brightness, there are phones with flashlight that if you see them, you would prefer the phone had no flash. Like my friend former tecno(can’t remb the brand). A candle would out shine the flash on that phone. So don’t just see “flash light” in the phone specifications and be happy, check how bright it is first before purchasing the phone.
6. Phone size
Again, Phone Size is not Screen Size, I’m writing this article believing people reading it are not too concerned with technology, so I’m trying to detail every point to be as easy to understand as possible. There is what is called Screen-to-body ratio, this is a specification category telling you how wide the phone bezel(the part on the front of your phone that is not the screen) are. This is to say even if two phones both have 5″ inch screen, they won’t actually have the same body size. Some phones are really sleek in your hands, and some are buggy, for example, samsung galaxy s6 has 5.1″ inch screen, but some phones like iphone 6 with 4.7″ inch screen is almost as big as it(the s6). This might be a problem when pocketing your phone or trying to put it in a purse, And you wanted a big screen phone. So next time, you might want to check this out.
7. Phone Weight
Some phones can break floyd may weather HEAVYWEIGHT record, an example is one injoo(or whatever the name is) phone I held, it was what I call HEAVY, unlike the iPhone that’s like paper. Weight becomes a problem when you carry your phone about especially without a bag, in your pockets whereby a heavy phone could draw your trousers down, or make your hands hurt while just holding it. You could actually use some heavy phones to build your muscles (just exaggerating). So when next you’re shopping, try to lift the phone up for a few seconds and see if you are comfortable with it.
8. Internal Memory (Android Phones Only)
If I you were to see the specifications of some phone, you would see 16gb internal memory, if Samsung tells you that, believe it. If Tecno tells you that, go and check the phone first! Now most phones especially the new brands and so called affordable phones, separates the actually internal memory from phones memory, with popular brands, these memory are joined together. Example is my fly era nano 8. The phone specification reads 4gb internal, well, the actual internal memory is 1GB, and it has a phone memory of 4GB. The internal memory is where the operating system and pre installed apps are, also with android there are some apps that can only stay in the internal memory, example are Whatsapp and BBM, and all primary app data stays in the internal memory, so it then get full sometimes, you get notifications that your memory is full, but can see more that enough space in your Phone memory, this is because the phone memory act like an in-built SD card. Not internal memory. But most phone would not write how big the actual internal memory is, but would write is as the phone memory or just write 4GB Rom. If you are the type that installs a lot of apps and updates all apps even stock apps, this is going to be a Big MIGHTY problem, the negative results creates an endless list. Its like having a limited memory phone with no SD card slot. So next time you on the verge to get a new phone, I would advice you pick one with a real internal memory, and real size of above 2GB. Or else go check out the phones actual internal memory size. By going to settings>>memory. Don’t just read 16GB rom and relax.
Please add more… If you want to. I don’t know it all!

BVN deadline

Bank Customers on queue for BVN enrolment in June, 2015

The Central Bank of Nigeria has told bank customers who have yet to obtain their Bank Verification Number not to hope that the apex bank will for the second time extend the October 31st deadline set for the conclusion of the exercise.
The CBN stated it does not intend to shift the deadline again.
The Deputy Director, Banking and Payments System Department, CBN, Mr. Musa Jimoh, stated this at an interactive session with journalists in Lagos recently, according to a statement sent to SUNDAY PUNCH.
He said, “With less than two months to the expiration of the deadline, the advice from the regulator for bank customers that have yet to enrol in the BVN platform is that they should endeavour to obtain their BVNs, otherwise they would discover that they may not be able to deposit money in or make withdrawals from their accounts.”

WAEC adjusts exam timetable for Sallah

WAEC adjusts exam timetable for Sallah
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has adjusted the timetable of the September/October 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for private candidates to meet the demand of Muslim candidates.
Head of WAEC’s National Office Mr Charles Eguridu announced this yesterday in Abuja at a media parley with the Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ECAN).
He said WAEC had rescheduled the examination, which was to hold on September 25 to October 10 because of the Sallah festivities.
According to the new timetable, Government 2 (Essay) and Government 1 (Objective) scheduled for 2 pm and 4 pm on Friday, September 18, would now hold by 2:30-5:30 pm for papers 2 and 1 on the same date.
Mathematics (2 & 1) scheduled for Friday, September 25, was postponed to Saturday October 10, with Paper 2, holding from 9:30 am to noon and paper 1, from 3-4:30 pm.
He said the examination body was concerned about the yearning of the people.
His words: “Our Muslim brothers expressed concern about the timetable. Some papers were scheduled between 2 pm and 4 pm, and some just before the end of Jumat prayers.
“Our attention has been drawn to this concern and only this afternoon the chairman of WAEC in Nigeria, called my attention and we have decided to effect some amendment to address the concerns of our Muslim brothers.”
The board chairman, who is also the director of Basic and Secondary Education in the Federal  Ministry of Education, Mrs Ann Okonkwo, called on Nigerians to support WAEC in its efforts to meet growing demands.
She pledged the support of the Federal Government in ensuring that examination malpractice is reduced.

10 Things You Can Do Today To Become Healthier

Being healthy is one of the most important aspect of human life. Feeling and looking healthy gives is the foundation that is required for any and all other things you plan to do with your life.
To prevent having to go see a doctor way too frequently and to maintain good health, start doing these ten things today.
Drink more water: The importance of having enough water cannot be overemphasized. Water aids digestion, keeps the body hydrated, helps with weight loss, keeps your skin looking good and flushes out harmful toxins in the body. It is recommended that you have up to 8 glasses of water daily.
Take a walk: Some kind of daily exercise is very important for us as humans. It is completely harmful to spend too much time sitting or lying down. Something as simple as taking a walk will help circulate blood flow, keep you healthy, keep you energized and improve brain function.
Get enough sleep: In this fast-paced world of ours, quite a number of us have forgotten the importance of adequate sleep. It is important to give our body ample opportunity to rest and reboot. While doctors recommend at least over 6 hours of sleep per night, it is important that we sleep according to what our body requires. We all have an in-built sleep clock and the best way to figure this out is to spend a few days going to bed at a reasonable hour and watching what time we wake. Calculate the average of hours and that is the amount of time your body needs to reboot.
Have more sex: This might sound funny but experts have explored the health benefits of having more sex which includes reduced stress, curing of headaches and an overall relaxing effect on the body.
Get some rest: Just like adequate sleep is important, getting some rest between the day is also important. Take about 5 minute intervals from your busy day and just get some rest. The body is not made to work non-stop, it needs some break from time to time even during the day. Do not deprive your body of this.
Have breakfast: A lot of us are guilty of skipping breakfast, forgetting that this is truly the most important meal of the day. It provides the body with much needed fuel after an overnight fast, reduces the chances of you being overweight and helps the brain to function better.
Eat more fruits: Vitamins and fibre are important parts of everyday diet and giving your body enough fruits make this possible. Benefits of these nutrients include, reduction of chances of heart diseases, preventing cancers and diabetes.
Cut down sugar: Filling yourself with the wrong kinds of sugar will certainly have an adverse effect on your health. Too much sugar causes such conditions as diabetes, liver diseases and obesity. Simply put, sugar causes more harm than good.
Sleep naked: A lot of people do not get the needed benefits of enough sleep simply because of how they sleep. Always sleep in loose clothing, or even naked, if possible, to aid circulation and give your body more space to relax.
Meditate: Sometimes, our minds are cluttered with so many thoughts, ideas, worries, etc. While this cannot altogether be prevented, a good way to make sure they do not cause harmful effect on your health is if you take a few minute of your day to meditate. Consciously clear your mind on all thoughts and focus on having a relaxed mind. A few minutes of this a day will do wonders for your state of mind.
All this being said, a good way to make sure you always stay health is to listen  to your body. Your body always has its own way of letting you know when something is not right or when something is missing. Do not ignore the signs as this can escalate some health issues. Regular chekup is also recommended.

Marijuana Should Be Legalized In Nigeria - Seun Kuti

Afrobeat act Seun Kuti and the youngest son of legendary afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti has said that marijuana should be legalized in the country.

Seun Kuti spoke for the legalization of ‘weed’ in an interview with The Nation newspaper.
Read the excerpt below:
There are doctors and scientists who believe that marijuana should be legalised. There are also lawyers, judges, and politicians who believe that the war on drugs is a false war. That is actually a war on the poor people all over the world, because poor people and rich people use drugs to be sane. But you will find that here, people are in jail more for drug use

Seun Kuti further said the Federal Government has not done any research on marijuana and its uses.
We as Africans had no reason to ban marijuana. It was done out of the U.S. lobby, forcing our governments to ban the drug. I don’t think that the Nigerian government has ever carried out any independent research on marijuana. One of the biggest markets in the world for marijuana in the world is Israel (which is a more religious country than Nigeria). But they understand the benefits… especially the economic benefits. So much wealth can be generated from it, but that is another issue entirely.
Meanwhile, sometimes in June, Seun Kuti wrote down his thoughts concerning the legalization of weed in the United States of America.
