JAMB Fixes Cut-Off Marks For Tertiary Institutions

Candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria now have cause to smile as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed the minimum cut-off marks for 2017, despite the ongoing strike by the academic staff union of universities.

At a policy meeting on the 2017/2018 admission exercise in Abuja, the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, announced 120 as the minimum cut-off marks for admissions into universities in Nigeria.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, and heads of tertiary institutions across the country.

The cut-off mark for admission into polytechnics and colleges of education was fixed at 100, while that of innovative enterprising institutes was pegged at 110.

Professor Oloyede, however, said the institutions are at liberty to raise their cut off marks for admission above the minimum benchmark set by the board.

More than 1.7 million candidates applied to study various courses in tertiary institutions across the country in 2017 and with the minimum benchmark fixed by JAMB, admission seekers with requisite qualifications may find it easier to gain admission into institutions of their choice.

WAEC adjusts exam timetable for Sallah

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has adjusted the timetable of the September/October 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for private candidates to meet the demand of Muslim candidates.

Head of WAEC’s National Office Mr Charles Eguridu announced this yesterday in Abuja at a media parley with the Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ECAN).

He said WAEC had rescheduled the examination, which was to hold on September 25 to October 10 because of the Sallah festivities.

According to the new timetable, Government 2 (Essay) and Government 1 (Objective) scheduled for 2 pm and 4 pm on Friday, September 18, would now hold by 2:30-5:30 pm for papers 2 and 1 on the same date.

Mathematics (2 & 1) scheduled for Friday, September 25, was postponed to Saturday October 10, with Paper 2, holding from 9:30 am to noon and paper 1, from 3-4:30 pm.

He said the examination body was concerned about the yearning of the people.

His words: “Our Muslim brothers expressed concern about the timetable. Some papers were scheduled between 2 pm and 4 pm, and some just before the end of Jumat prayers.

“Our attention has been drawn to this concern and only this afternoon the chairman of WAEC in Nigeria, called my attention and we have decided to effect some amendment to address the concerns of our Muslim brothers.”

The board chairman, who is also the director of Basic and Secondary Education in the Federal  Ministry of Education, Mrs Ann Okonkwo, called on Nigerians to support WAEC in its efforts to meet growing demands.

She pledged the support of the Federal Government in ensuring that examination malpractice is reduced.

65,000 candidates to write Unilorin Post-UTME exam

The University of Ilorin says 65, 000 candidates seeking admission into it for the 2015/2016 academic session have been cleared to appear for the post UTME screening which begins on Monday, August 17.

The Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs of the institution, Mr Kunle Akogun, who made this known in a statement in Ilorin on Sunday said the weeklong exercise would hold simultaneously in Ilorin and Lagos.

Akogun said only candidates who scored a minimum of 180 marks in the 2015 UTME and made the University their first choice would take part in the computer-based test (CBT).

He advised candidates to bring along to their respective centres printed copies of their examination schedules indicating that they were slated to write the examination at a particular date and time.

Akogun said this became necessary as there were many batches for the examination daily.

He also advised prospective candidates to bring along with them payment receipts generated from the students’ portal of the University’s website.

He warned that the accreditation team would insist on the receipt from the varsity’s website to verify candidate’s identity– through pictures that tally with the face of each candidate.

He said that only registered candidates for the screening exercise would be allowed into the screening premises.

Akogun cautioned the candidates against indecent dressing and bringing of cell phones or any electronic appliance into the examination hall.

“Candidates for the pre-admission screening exercise are also advised to be decently dressed, as candidates with indecent dressing will not be allowed into the screening premises.

“Also, phones and all other forms of mobile communication, electronic devices, bags and luggage are not allowed within the screening premises, he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 73, 250 of the over 107,000 candidates that applied for admission into the University this year scored 180 marks and above at the UTME.

NAN also reports that by the close of the portal on Sunday, only 65,000 out of the 73,250 qualified candidates registered for the post UMTE.
